John Griffith London nació en San Francisco en 1876. Era hijo de un astrólogo ambulante, al que no conoció, y su madre era espiritista, se casó con John London unos meses después del nacimiento del niño- de quien el escritor tomó el apellido.
Realizó estudios secundarios mientras trabajaba. Realizó diversos oficios, incluso fue marino. En 1897 viajó a Alaska. De regreso a su ciudad natal, comenzó a escribir los relatos de sus viajes. En 1900 publicó "El hijo del lobo" que fue muy bien acogido por el público. Escribió más de medio centenar de obras. También fue corresponsal de guerra.
Su vida fue azarosa, llena de contradicciones, agitador político, dado al alcoholismo, con fracaso en sus dos matrimonios. Jack London se suicidó a los 40 años.
